They are affectionately called La Vinotinto or "The Wine-Red." The team typically plays its official home games in three different stadiums, including The Polideportivo Cachamay in Puerto Ordaz, the Estadio José Antonio Anzoátegui in Puerto La Cruz, and the Estadio Pueblo Nuevo in San Cristóbal. For friendly matches, they utilize various stadiums across Venezuela. In contrast to many other South American countries and similar to some Caribbean nations, Venezuela is more invested in baseball than football, which has historically impacted the success of their national football team in CONMEBOL competitions. Despite this, the team has seen improvement over the years. Notably, as of 2022, Venezuela remains the only CONMEBOL team that has never qualified for the FIFA World Cup. In the past, they would often struggle in qualification tournaments without securing a single victory, although this trend has changed since 1998. Their best result at the Copa América was a fifth-place finish in their debut appearance in 1967. Recent years have seen a shift in the football landscape, with nations outside the traditional football powerhouses showing interest in the sport. This global trend has encouraged Venezuela to focus on player development and garner greater fan support. Despite not yet qualifying for the World Cup, Venezuela achieved the remarkable feat of being ranked 25th in the FIFA World Ranking as of December 2019, the highest-ranked team to have not made an appearance at the tournament.
